The Many Faces of Pleven - Variety Description

Grape variety Pleven - Bulgarian selection

Grape variety Pleven - Bulgarian selection. It was bred by specialists of the Institute of Viticulture in the city of Pleven, and therefore received such a name. His "parents" are varieties Amber and Italy. As a result of crossing, a table grape variety with excellent consumer properties was obtained - premature and fruitful.

A huge gene pool has been collected at the institute and is being carried out by Ivanov, Vylchev and other scientists in order to develop grape varieties that are highly resistant to low temperatures.

The Pleven Sustainable, Muscat and European varieties obtained as a result of this activity of the Institute of Viticulture became the most famous and widespread. Pleven grapes became the basis for their selection.

The parent couple of the Steady, who is also known as Phenomenon, Augustine, V25 / 20, were Pleven and Vilar Blanc. Nutmeg obtained from crossing varieties Druzhba and Strashensky. European, known as V52 / 46, Super Pleven or Eurostandard, came from a pair of Pleven and Friendship.

A few words about these "heirs" of Pleven:

  • Pleven Sustainable has good resistance to the influence of winter cold, easy to care for, transportable, little susceptible to disease and damage by pests. The variety is early ripe, productive. It has been in the state registry since 2002 and is recommended for cultivation in the North Caucasus region.

  • Pleven Eurostandard is high-yielding, its quickly ripening berries have a harmonious taste and large brushes.

    Its fast-ripening berries have a harmonious taste and large brushes.

  • Muscat Pleven with dense clusters, accumulating up to 21% sugar in berries, in favorable weather it can ripen in a hundred days from the start of the growing season. Its productivity is very high. Often used in winemaking.

Grade characteristics

Pleven - table grapes with a very early ripening

Pleven is a table grape with a very early ripening period, which, depending on the growing region, ranges from 90-120 days from the beginning of the growing season. It has a high yield of marketable products.

The bushes of this grape variety have great growth power, so they are very suitable for design purposes.

Inflorescences are formed a lot, to regulate the load on the vine, rationing is necessary.

The flowers are bisexual, pollinated very well.

The Pleven bunches are medium density cylindrical in shape with a lower part converging on a cone. The variety is not prone to peeling, even when overloading the bush.

Large berries of Pleven ovoid form when ripe gain amber-yellow color. Their taste is harmonious, and the aroma contains notes of muscat. The peel of the berries is dense, the flesh under it is fleshy and juicy. Berries that are not promptly removed from the bush can remain on the vine for almost three weeks without losing their good taste and appearance. Wasps they are not damaged.

The variety has good resistance to frost and is little susceptible to the disease by oidimum and mildew.

Harvested is perfectly stored, during transportation does not lose its appearance and taste.

Autumn pruning of Pleven varieties is carried out depending on the place of growth: in the southern regions they make short pruning, in the north - long pruning.

Pleven is propagated by cuttings that are perfectly rooted. Its vine can also be used for grafting other grape varieties.

This variety is one of the few recommended for beginner growers, as it does not require special agricultural techniques, increased attention or special growing conditions.

From Bulgaria to Siberia - how to grow Pleven grapes

A native of Bulgaria has long been grown by Siberians in personal plots

Imagine this is true! A native of Bulgaria has long been grown by Siberians in personal plots along with other varieties of early ripening. The main thing, in the case of planting Pleven in regions where there are factors of stress on the grapes, is compliance with a number of rules:

  • with a high level of groundwater, the area that is prepared for planting grapes is certainly well drained;
  • they dig up the whole plot allotted for grapes and at the same time add organic matter;
  • plant a grape bush on a mound of soil, which serves both to remove excess moisture and to protect the root system from low temperatures;
  • planting one vine is done at a distance of not less than two meters from the other;
  • pits for planting grapes are prepared in advance, filling them a third with fertile soil and humus;
  • when planting a vine, they monitor the level of its deepening so that the root neck is above the soil level;
  • the seedling must be tied to a support;
  • the soil near the planted vines will certainly mulch;
  • the first ten days after planting, carefully control the soil moisture, water the seedlings in a timely manner and loosen the soil after that.

Watering and fertilizer schedule - table

The order of irrigation and top dressingEvent period
I wateringSpring watering after a dry garter with the addition of ammonium nitrate in accordance with the recommendations on the package.
II wateringMandatory watering for a week after pruning.
III wateringWhen young shoots reach a length of about 25-30 cm.
IV wateringBefore the mass flowering of grapes, superphosphate, potash fertilizers and zinc salts are added.
V wateringIn the period when the berries have reached the size of a pea, potassium sulfate, superphosphate, and ash are introduced in parallel.
VI wateringAfter harvesting, watering is combined with the introduction of superphosphate.

Over the entire growing season, three treatments of grapes with fungicides are carried out to prevent fungal diseases.

In winter, grapes are sheltered, removed from a support and bent to the ground, or creating a shelter resembling a greenhouse. Materials for creating insulation should not be film, it is necessary that they allow air and moisture to pass through.

Message from Luda Avin

Pleven is too small for its ripening period, but this is not the worst thing, the worst thing is the black dots on the vine (like flies sat), and then these points appear on the stem of the bunch and partially on the berries themselves. I just don’t want to eat it, what a market there is.

... Pleven, and Eurostandard, it may not be big differences, but significant, but for some reason they are identified as the same, it is not clear ????? ... about the small berry ???, also in doubt ... maybe small but it’s not critical ... the cluster that I’m holding is not the most outstanding, usually they are within 1-1.5 which one then goes for the market ??? ... the only thing is there is no nutmeg ... but no one disputes, but categorically declare ... sucks !!!, you should always ascribe ... IMHO ...

In the last 10-15 years, they have been well recommended I have a trace. varieties: pearls Saba Sabo , Aleshenkin but without treatments from flour. You won’t get dew-crop . Siberian cherry, Ornamental, Gounod? variety common in Nizhny Novgorod region, but the name is conditional, this variety MI Eliseev brought from Latvia in 1945-45 , Pleven stable and nutmeg, Aesop, BChZ, Pearls pink, Victoria, Gift of the Magarach. From the "gut": Korinka Russian, Pink seedless. For these varieties, I am calm, even with freezing, they are well restored. Until September 1, all ripen exceptions - a cold summer, then the competition is postponed for 1-2 weeks.

From the above information it is clear that the work of Bulgarian breeders was not in vain. The Pleven variety that they developed is popular with winegrowers and has spread widely even in territories whose climatic conditions create additional difficulties for growing grapes in general. Once again, Pleven’s unpretentiousness and the availability of its cultivation for beginner winegrowers should be emphasized.
